A New Way to Look at Startpage
Our approach to Startpage updates is simple: we listen.
Listening to Startpage users and our global team, we’re always pushing for updates – none too big or too small. From the News tab feature to the much-requested Region Filter and the return of the private calculator, our team has been hard at work.
Today, we’re enhancing your interaction with Startpage by automatically reflecting your device’s appearance preferences. Every time you visit Startpage, the theme will automatically be your operating system’s preferred theme: Light or Dark.
Daniel Russell, a Senior Software Engineer at Startpage says: “I know I really appreciate when a website automatically applies a dark theme after I set my OS’s preferences to use dark mode. So we talked about it as a team and decided we really wanted to pass on this convenience to our users.”
If you’re a power user and familiar with Startpage settings, you’ve probably noticed we have a number of Startpage theme options in our Settings page: Black, Dark, Air, Night, and Default. No worries! These will not go away. Startpage users will continue to be able to customize their Startpage theme by updating their settings.
Turning on Dark Theme on Your Devices
You can easily activate your dark theme or as Apple calls it “Dark Mode” on your iPhone, iPad, or Macbook, by updating your Appearance settings.
- iPhone and iPad (iOS): Click Settings > select Display & Brightness > choose one of the Appearances options. If you select Auto, the appearance will automatically use the light appearance during the day, and the dark appearance at night.
- Macbook (OS): Click on the Apple menu on the top left > select System Preferences > select General > choose one of the Appearances options. If you select Auto, the appearance will automatically use the light appearance during the day, and the dark appearance at night.
For Android devices, you can activate your dark theme, or as Android also calls it: “Color Inversion.”
- Android (OS): Click Settings > select Display > enable Dark Theme or Color Inversion.
Regardless of what theme you choose on your device, Startpage’s theme will reflect your device’s preference.
